Your in-paren comment has been bubbling around in my head for awhile, and if the story had been focused on that, it could've been pretty damn interesting. I mean, if you had a weapon like that, and it turned on you, and now you've got to wrangle with it, there could be a story there.

Actually, a number of cultures have "weapon with some self-awareness" in their folklore/histories, so it's not that uncommon. Plus, SFF has picked up on that and used it, so the ups & downs of a self-aware weapon have also become solid tropes, such that it wouldn't take a western reader that long to get into the groove of an unfamiliar/non-western culture with similar tropes.

Sadly, none of that changes that the weapon's role in the story really was to play with the whole white man's burden bullshit. Sigh.
